ESBS is a multinational engineering school, the only one of its kind. It runs 3-year biotechnology courses for German, French and Swiss students in a multicultural atmosphere. Four universities of the Upper Rhine (Strasbourg, Freiburg, Basel and Karslruhe) are the partners of a 3-language (French, German, English) curriculum.

Degree courses

/ Biochemistry / Molecular and cell biology
/ Applied genomics and bioproduction
/ Microbiology / Genetics
/ Molecular engineering / Process engineering

Curriculum

The ESBS degree (accredited by the French Commission for engineering qualifications) is officially recognised in all three countries and confers the title of engineer and Diplom-Biotechnologe. I

  • The lecturers in the four universities give their lectures in Illkirch, a suburb of Strasbourg. ESBS provides theoretical courses in all areas of biotechnologies.
  • Apart from the core curriculum, several options are available: bioproduction, genomics and life science modelling , environmental biotechnology.
  • Apart from theoretical and hands-on teaching at Illkirch, lectures and practical work is also organised in the partner  universities.

1st year

/ 3 weeks in Basel (general microbiology), 2 weeks in Karlsruhe (process engineering).

2nd year

/ 2 weeks in Basel (applied microbiology), 6 weeks in Freiburg (plant physiology and biotechnology ), 3 weeks in Karlsruhe (bioproduction).
/ Placements are in a university or private research laboratory, including one mandatory placement in  an industrial laboratory.  Another mandatory placement covers 4 to 6 weeks between the 1st and 2nd years. The end-of-studies placement lasts 30 weeks.

Admissions

1st year

40 students are admitted on the basis of their academic record and an interview.  20 students are selected by Strasbourg and another 20 by the other 3 universities.

  • In France
    By academic record

    / L2 or L3, BTS, DUT.

    Archimède common entrance exam

/ BCPST and PC of the classes préparatoires.

  • In Germany and Switzerland
  • Very similar procedures are applied, based on levels L2 and L3 (1st and 2nd years of the degree course). A member of the Illkirch faculty sits in on the selection process each year, to be sure the students are homogeneous in level.

2nd year

By academic record and interview

/ Admission of a limited number of students, holders of M1 (1st year Masters course).
French students need to speak German, while German and Swiss students need to be able to speak French.
