Founded at the time when the Schlumberger brothers were experimenting in Alsace with the first methods of applied geophysics, EOST has a long tradition of training graduates in geophysical engineering, with a curriculum that combines theoretical, practical and field training, in close collaboration with industry. The degree courses involve in-depth study of the geological environment, geophysical methods and mathematical and computer tools for processing and interpreting data.
Degree courses
/ Geophysics
/ Exploration and development of underground resources (energy, water, ores)
/ Control of the geological environment (natural hazards, pollution, storage)
/ Knowledge and observation of Earth (land, sea, space)
Curriculum
The EOST engineering degree is accredited by the French Commission for engineering qualifications and is awarded after three years to students beginning with 2 years post-secondary education.
1st and 2nd years
Mandatory modules
/ Mechanics of continuous media, geology, mathematics, computer science, digital analysis , signal processing , inverse methods, English, economics.
Optional modules
/ Seismology, seismic, geodesics, gravimetry, potential methods, geomagnetism, electromagnetism, properties of rocks, hydrology.
- Geophysical measurements in the field and in the laboratory. Geology field course in the Alps.
- IT project, research project.
- Summer placement in a laboratory or company.
3rd year
Modules and conferences
/ With speakers working in the exploration and development of raw materials, geotechnical engineering and the environment.
Geophysics field camp in Alsace. Campaign in the Mediterranean sea and borehole measurements.
Company placement (six months)
/ With a dissertation to obtain the degree.
- Teaching is backed by two mixed research units, ULP-CNRS (Strasbourg Institute of Physics of the Globe, Centre of geochemistry of the surface) and a mixed service unit (Observatory).
- EOST also offers degree, Master's and PhD courses in Earth and environmental sciences.
Admissions

Career opportunities
Graduate engineers generally work in companies and organisations involved in the exploration of the subsoil and the understanding of geological processes.
They work in the following areas:
/ Exploration and development of underground resources (energy, water, ores)
/ Control of the geological environment (natural hazards, pollution, storage)
/ Knowledge and observation of Earth (land, sea, space)
EOST graduate opportunities

Networks
/ EOST is a member of the ESIS federation (Science schools for engineers in Strasbourg), which represents four internal schools and one external school of the Université Louis Pasteur.
International
/ Option of a year studying abroad (Erasmus) or a gap-year abroad between the 2nd and 3rd years.
/ 6 month placements in companies in France or abroad (in 2008, 65 % of the placements were organised abroad).
/ A large number of research-based collaborations: PhD students, post-doctorates and foreign students.
Student life
/ The student Bureau (BDE) organises social and sports events.
/ The Strasbourg University Geophysical Society (SUGS) sets out to promote geophysics through conferences, measurement campaigns and taking part in international congresses.
/ The Forum horizon chimie offers an interface linking students to industry.
/ SCS Strasbourg chimie service is an association that offers, among other activities, talks for local schools.
