The Ecole Nationale du Génie de l’Eau et de l’Environnement de Strasbourg is a higher education establishment run by the Ministry in charge of Agriculture. Its principle vocation is to train engineers and managers who specialise in water (drinking water, purification, agricultural hydraulics), the protection of the environment (natural hydrosystems, treatment of waste), rural engineering and land development.

Degree courses

/ Applied hydraulics
/ Engineering of the natural habitat
/ Drinking water
/ Sanitation and sewerage
/ Waste management
/ Public services

Curriculum

The ENGEES engineering degree is recognised by the French Commission for engineering qualifications and is awarded after 3 years of study for students with two years' post-secondary education.

Teaching comprises lectures, seminars, lab work, projects, field trips and placements, stretched over 5 semesters, S5 to S10

/ S5 : Introduction to the basic science and jobs
/ S6 : Water engineering and management
/ S7 : Hydraulic systems and networks
/ S8 : Water treatment and purification
/ S9 : Several options available (see below)
/ S10 : End of studies placement.

3rd year (S9 &S10)

Based on an
individual professional projet

To help guide each students to possible specialisation: Urban engineering / Environmental engineering / Waste management / Coaccredited Masters (six specialisms) / MSc abroad (UK, Spain) / Sanitary engineering at the ENSP Rennes, IAE of Strasbourg, ENTPE, IRC, École Polytechnique of Montréal, other Masters (research and pro)…

The courses also include placements, with at least one month spent abroad

/ Two weeks: placement as a manual worker in a public works company.
/ One week: introduction to  Government departments
/ Three months : hands-on engineering placement in an engineering office.
/ Six months : End-of-studies placement.

Career opportunities

Through the courses it offers, ENGEES sets out  to give its graduates a thorough grounding in hydraulics (both quantatively and qualitatively) thereby producing fully operational engineers able to work, for example, in local government (drinking water, sanitation and waste management), the management of public services and sustainable regional development (including water-related environmental and sanitary risks).

The word "environment" as it appears in the school's name, does not just refer to the natural habitat that development and planning actions seek to preserve, but also to the economic, legal and social environment which has to be factored in to have a successful engineering project.

The research carried out in the school's laboratories is strongly geared to the operational needs of the sector.

Job opportunities for ENGEES graduates lie both in the public sector (agricultural and environmental engineering with the Ministry of Agriculture), local authorities, public or partially public-owned organizations (water agencies, public works companies, government-controlled corporations etc)., and the private sector (water distribution services, engineering consultancies, construction companies, etc.)

Post-ENGEES careers

Engees graduates usually take up the jobs descibed below:

  • Chargé d’affaires/sales engineer
  • Researcher/R&D engineer
  • Consultant engineer
  • Design engineer
  • Management posts in the civil service

In the following areas :

  • Checking conformity of installations (e.g. water police)
